The Past
A table by the railway tracks
In the early 1910s, a French construction company arrived in Platamonas to build the railway line
connecting Macedonia to Thessaly, beneath the Castle, alongside the sea. Dozens of workers
came to dig tunnels, lay tracks, and build stations. And there, to feed them, a small canteen was
born, serving simple dishes next to a cobbler's bench where the men's shoes were repaired.
That canteen was the beginning of Kymata.
From canteen to taverna
When the station was completed in 1916, and refugees settled in the area in 1924, Platamonas
began to come alive. The little canteen grew into a taverna, first with makeshift metal structures,
gradually adding more dishes, and by 1950 it had a few rooms for travelers passing through.
